What are the best digital nomad tools and resources?

In our previous article on 'What is a digital nomad and how can VNC technology help?', we detailed what a digital nomad, explained the types of digital nomads, and how VNC Connect’s technology can help them.

It is now time to get into the specifics of what a digital nomad’s life entails.

What do you need to start a digital nomad life?

There are a few things that are essential when starting a digital nomad life.

First of all, you will need to work in an industry that favours such a way of living. Industries in which this lifestyle would work well are many. Of course, it also depends on the company policy on remote working. If you’re a freelancer, you’re in luck, as you might find this much easier.

However, IT workers, as well as those working in various creative industries find it easier to do this. People working in production, for example, might find it next to impossible. This is because their job involves tools and machinery, so they can only do their work in one specific place.

You will also need a financial cushion before you start. Depending on what your plans are, you would need to have some savings, should things not work out. As you will be travelling halfway across the world with no family or friends nearby, so it is essential to have this security.

Depending on circumstances, you will also need a home address and residence. This is both for tax reasons and to receive mail. If you can afford (or plan to) keep your current house – problem solved. If not, relatives or friends can help you with this.

You will also need to make sure that you have a stable and fast internet connection. If you plan on travelling all the time, a portable modem with a mobile connection is probably your best bet. A good tip is to check coverage beforehand, though.

As far as accessing resources on your home or work machine goes, all you need is for it to run VNC Server. You can then access said resources using VNC Viewer, on all your devices. You can even print a document or transfer a file from the remote machine. All this while keeping things as secure as possible

And if you’ve thought of a brilliant idea for your presentation while out, VNC Connect has you covered. You can fire up your smartphone and do what you need to do. It doesn’t matter if it’s an iOS or Android device. Dedicated apps are available for both.

Digital nomad advantages and disadvantages

There are advantages and disadvantages to life as a digital nomad. Let’s take a look at some of these.

Digital nomad advantages

  • Great work-life balance – your schedule only depends on you and your work. Therefore, you can organize your schedule as you see fit.
  • Less distraction when doing your work – provided you keep to a strict schedule and get organized.
  • New experiences – you can travel, see new places and experience new cultures.
  • Less expensive lifestyle – in the long run living as a digital nomad should save you money. Especially, if you choose to live in a modified camper or van.

Digital nomad disadvantages

  • internet connection problems – depending on where you travel, weak connections are possible. Luckily, VNC Connect’s patent-protected technology automatically optimizes to the speed of your network. This is especially effective in low-bandwidth and high-latency environments. While doing so, it makes sure that you have access to anything you need, in a stable and secure way.
  • distancing from others – you might end up feeling distanced from close ones in the long run. Of course, things are easier with all the means of communication available today. Even so, technology can’t entirely replace human contact.
  • lack of motivation – motivation may become hard to come by after some time spent away from the office.
