VNC® Viewer for iOS
Troubleshooting connections
Note: These instructions are likely to apply irrespective of which VNC-compatible Server technology you are using.
If you cannot connect, check the following.
- On the computer you want to control:
- Is it turned on and connected to a network to which your iPhone or iPod touch can also connect (for example a Local Area Network, or the Internet)?
- Is VNC-compatible Server technology running or enabled on the computer? See how to start VNC Server.
- Is the VNC-compatible Server configured correctly? If you are using VNC Server, the VNC Server Status dialog displays a green tick if it is ready to receive connections. If you are using Screen Sharing or Remote Management, note it must be configured to enable VNC Viewer to connect. See how to do this.
- Are you sure you have the correct network address? See how to find this out for VNC Server.
- If you are connecting over the Internet (for example, via 3G), have you configured firewall(s) protecting the computer to allow network communications through to the port on which the VNC-compatible Server is listening? Find out more about this.
- If you are connecting over the Internet (for example, via 3G), have you configured router(s) to forward network communications to the port on which the VNC-compatible Server is listening? Find out more about this.
- On your iPhone or iPod touch:
- Is a network available (Wi-Fi or a 3G/GRPS/EDGE mobile data network)?
- In the VNC Viewer application, have you entered the network address correctly? If the computer is running VNC Server and it is listening on a port other than 5900, have you appended the correct number of colons and the port number to the address? Find out more about this.
- Have you entered authentication credentials correctly, if prompted to do so?
- If the computer is running VNC Server, did you enter the authentication credentials of an authorized computer user? By default, VNC Server specifies password-native authentication, which means you should be able to connect by specifying the user name and password you normally use to log on to the computer. However, your user name may not have been added to the authorization list.
- If the computer is running VNC Server, did you tap Yes to acknowledge the VNC Server signature (a message that appears the first time you connect)? Tapping No cancels the connection request.
Providing you have the necessary permissions on the computer, you can add yourself to the authorization list, or you can change the authentication mechanism. See the VNC Enterprise Edition User Guide for more information.
