VNC® Viewer now supports iOS 5
RealVNC adds multitasking, full screen display, external monitor and Apple TV support to its remote access and control App
23rd November 2011: RealVNC, the original developer of VNC technology, has announced a new version of its popular VNC Viewer application that provides remote control of Mac OS X, Windows, Linux or UNIX computers from an Apple iOS device. Available now from the App Store, VNC Viewer version 2 supports the recently released iOS 5 and adds innovative new features including support for Apple TV and external monitors. VNC Viewer for iOS is already used all over the world to connect and take full remote control of office and home computers.
With this latest version of VNC Viewer, any external monitor that is plugged into the iOS device will automatically display the remotely connected computer's desktop. And with iPhones or iPads running iOS 5 with Airplay Mirroring turned on, the computer's desktop will be automatically transferred to Apple TV. In both cases, the mobile device's screen acts as the keyboard and mouse.
Other features include support for multitasking which maintains the remote connection for 10 minutes on switch out from VNC Viewer, unless the user explicitly disconnects. Full screen display has also been added to enable the user to view the entire desktop of a connected computer.
VNC Viewer for iOS enables users to provide remote IT support, access home computers whilst travelling and view Flash-based websites. To connect from VNC Viewer, VNC “Server”-compatible technology must be installed and running on the computer to be accessed. The recommended VNC Enterprise Edition provides robust, high-performance connections and unmatched flexibility along with strong security.
“VNC Viewer has already proved to be a popular and highly-rated App for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone users,” said Andy Harter, CEO at RealVNC. “This latest version with new functionality and support for iOS 5 ensures that VNC Viewer remains the App of choice for all Apple mobile users that want the freedom to connect to their computers from a single device, wherever they are.”
VNC Viewer version 2 is available now on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. It can be downloaded from the App Store at http://itunes.com/apps/vncviewer. A version of VNC Viewer is also available for Android from the Android Market.
RealVNC's software solutions are used by hundreds of millions of people around the world in both desktop and mobile platforms for remote access and control. The technology is used in every sector of industry, commerce, government and education. Founded by the original inventors of VNC, RealVNC is the only organization able to offer a commercial license to embed VNC remote access capability in third-party products and offerings.
