Lead Software Engineer

Shape the next generation of VNC® remote connectivity technology.

The company

RealVNC® is a highly successful software company based in Cambridge (UK) city centre. As the original developers of VNC remote access technology our software is used by hundreds of millions of users worldwide from the non-technical home user to IT professionals from global companies, such as Intel, IBM, NASA, Shell, DreamWorks and Philips.

The role

We're looking for someone to lead a small team of engineers working on the client side of our remote access products. You'll be joining our Viewers team, working on the local desktop, mobile and web applications that allow people to see and control remote computers. The team of five developers and two embedded testers cover a wide range of areas, from efficient networking and protocol designs to creating an effortless and attractive UX. The team works with a diverse set of platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and HTML5, using platform-native code on top of a common C++ core.

The role is part technical leadership and part project management, with line management responsibility for the developers in the team. The team works in an increasingly agile way, so you'll be working with product management and key stakeholders to schedule and track the team's work, coordinate with the wider product engineering team, and steer the overall technical direction of the team itself when required. As a line manager, you'll mentor and develop the members of your team, while your development experience means you can still pitch in and write code as needed.

We have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and are looking for creative, flexible and collaborative approaches. We value the input of everyone working on our projects, and talented individuals can make a big difference. In exchange, we expect you to be highly motivated, willing to explore novel solutions, and able to make a valuable contribution to our products.

  •     have previous team lead experience within commercial software teams
  •     come from a software engineering background, ideally with C++ use, OO design skills and
        multi-platform experience
  •     can estimate, prioritise and track workloads for you and your team
  •     are familiar with agile methodologies such as Scrum and understand both their strengths
        and weaknesses
  •     can juggle the needs of different stakeholders, while keeping them up to date and setting
        expectations appropriately
  •     can bring out the best in people, and can develop them to go on to achieve even more
  •     have excellent oral and written communication skills
  •     have a good technical degree (or equivalent qualification / experience)

If you have any experience with mobile, web, networking or graphics technologies, that's a great bonus too.
