Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic means that there is no opting-out from telecommuting, and offices around the world are having to quickly adjust to working from home indefinitely.<\/p>

It is difficult for everyone. For many, this is more than just adjusting to working from home for the first time: it\u2019s doing so while dealing with the stress of a global pandemic.<\/p>

There are plenty of books and articles out there on how to stay productive working from home, but we found that many of the classic telecommuting tips don\u2019t really apply to this specific situation. So, we moved the conversation to our company chat and asked our RealVNC colleagues (some of whom aren\u2019t the biggest fans of full-time remote working), what they are doing to help ease the WFH load.<\/p>

This is what they came up with:<\/p>

1. Regular breaks<\/h2>

Set an alarm a couple of times a day<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pomodoro<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0technique is useful here)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to make you get up and make a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>drink or<\/span><\/span>\u00a0get a snack. Think about how many times you\u00a0<\/span><\/span>go to the kitchen for another\u00a0<\/span><\/span>cuppa<\/span><\/span>\u00a0when you\u2019re in the office \u2013 not only does it make you<\/span><\/span>\u00a0get\u00a0<\/span><\/span>up<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0stretch your legs , but it also fosters\u00a0<\/span><\/span>social interaction with coworkers other than those in your immediate desk area. Try co<\/span><\/span>ordinating your breaks with others<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and have a quick\u00a0<\/span><\/span>call<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or<\/span><\/span>\u00a0set up a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>video conference room for people to drop in and out of when they take a break<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

2. Outdoor time<\/h2>

It\u2019s no secret that the sun and fresh air can play a big part in lifting your mood<\/span><\/span>, so if you\u2019ve got access to an outside space, make sure to utilize it<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and soak up those rays. Of course, if you\u2019re in the UK like us, the weather might scupper those plan<\/span><\/span>s entirely…<\/span><\/span><\/p>

3. Exercise<\/h2>

When you\u2019re not at the office, you\u2019re missing out on\u00a0<\/span><\/span>more exercise than you realize.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Getting to and from the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bus stop twice a day<\/span><\/span>, walking to the shops\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to grab\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a meal deal, or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>going for a stroll during the lunch break<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013 it all counts, and it\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a lot easier to move around less at home.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0There are\u00a0many fitness apps<\/a>\u00a0available<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and no shortage of home workout videos out there<\/span><\/span>, and a lot of them are currently free to help people\u00a0<\/span><\/span>exercise while stuck indoors<\/span><\/span>. It can be difficult to get the motivation to work out a<\/span><\/span>lone, so try to get others involved<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(family at home, your housemate, or even a friend over a video call)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this helps to keep you acco<\/span><\/span>untable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

4. Remember you’re not alone<\/span><\/h2>

The majority of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0us are silently (or not-so-silently) struggling<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0finding it difficult to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be\u00a0<\/span><\/span>our\u00a0<\/span><\/span>usual productive selves while everybody else\u00a0<\/span><\/span>seems to be<\/span><\/span>\u00a0on top of their work tasks while\u00a0<\/span><\/span>also\u00a0<\/span><\/span>finding time to bake delicious banana breads in the evening with time to spare.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Well, that\u2019s not really the case: what we found by talking to colleagues and friend<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>, is that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>everybody<\/span><\/span>\u00a0else is feeling the same<\/span><\/span>, whether they show it or not<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You\u2019re not working from home, you\u2019re at home trying to work during a crisis. It\u2019s not normal,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>your home life and work life are bl<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>nding\u00a0<\/span><\/span>together\u00a0<\/span><\/span>like\u00a0<\/span><\/span>never before<\/span><\/span>, it\u2019s stressful,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and productivity isn\u2019t always high. Do your best, and that IS enough right now.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

5. Be more asynchronous<\/span><\/h2>

Don\u2019t expect people to respond right away to a message. Don\u2019t worry if you miss<\/span><\/span>\u00a0an impro<\/span><\/span>m<\/span><\/span>ptu call. There\u2019s a lot going on,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>people are working different hours than normal to fit other things in, and many people have kids at home to take care of. Flexibility is paramount\u00a0<\/span><\/span>at the moment<\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2013<\/span><\/span>\u00a0give people the benefit of the doubt, they\u2019ll respond or call back.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>With very few exceptions, those<\/span><\/span>\u00a0extra 15 min<\/span><\/span>utes before getting an answer to your burning question isn\u2019t going to end the world<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

6. Differentiate your workspace<\/span><\/h2>

Not all of us have the luxury of a home office,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0so working from the sofa, dining table, or any other flat surface is a reality. This can make it more difficult to step away from work at the end of the day, as the spaces collide and merge. To combat this,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it can be useful to have something that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>specifically indicates work. This could be as simple as a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tablecloth<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to cover the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>surface\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you\u2019re using, or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>even something that you wear (<\/span><\/span>we\u2019ve heard that some of our Engineers have been wearing a lab coat or a Darth Vader helme<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span>, but if you\u2019re not into that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>you could try just wearing shoes<\/span><\/span>). As s<\/span><\/span>oon as work is over, put work things away somewhere out of sight if possible, and try to disconnect.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

7. Get comfortable<\/span><\/h2>

Again, not everyone has space for a proper office setup in their home, so many\u00a0<\/span><\/span>must<\/span><\/span>\u00a0improvise.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This article<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0has some great tips on working ergonomically\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>home,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>including\u00a0<\/span><\/span>switching up your position regularly<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to prevent aches and strains.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

8. Co-ordinate with your household members<\/span><\/h2>

Noise is expected in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0this unplanned<\/span><\/span>\u00a0WFH\u00a0<\/span><\/span>scenario, and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0can sometimes be unavoidable. However, if you have a very important meeting, liaise\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with those you live with to avoid your q<\/span><\/span>uarterly budget\u00a0<\/span><\/span>review<\/span><\/span>\u00a0being interrupted by sounds of a blender<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>shredding a sick guitar riff<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
