Using RealVNC Connect to operate two radio stations

James Valentine is an experienced radio broadcaster who owns and operates two independent local radio stations on the South Island of New Zealand: 100.3 FM (based in Timaru), and Oamaru FM 91.2 (located 85 kilometers south). New Zealand\u2019s l<\/span>ocal independent radio stations <\/span>compete <\/span>against large national companies which have advantages<\/span> in <\/span>both<\/span> scale and resources. For James Valentine, owner and operator of <\/span>t<\/span>wo<\/span> independent stations <\/span>(<\/span>100.3 FM in Timar<\/span>u<\/span> and Oamaru FM<\/span>)<\/span>, <\/span>keeping<\/span> costs to a minimum<\/span> is essential <\/span>for<\/span> remain<\/span>ing<\/span> competitive<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

James <\/span>has worked as a broadcaster for over twenty years, and<\/span> is a <\/span>well-known media personality in both <\/span>markets. <\/span>He has the capacity and expertise to provide localized programming for both stations, but driving between the broadcast locations in Timaru and Oamaru <\/span>to oversee programming is<\/span> not practical<\/span>. James decided <\/span>instead <\/span>to use run Oamaru FM <\/span>as a virtual station from his Timaru studio.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Remote access software helps, but which provider is best?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To operate Oamaru FM virtually, James needed remote access software that could help him <\/span>operate<\/span>\u00a0 a desktop computer<\/span>, router<\/span>, streaming software<\/span> and<\/span> a <\/span>transmitter tower<\/span> – all<\/span> located <\/span>85 kilometers away from his broadcast studio<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

James tried two other remote access solutions before signing up for Real<\/span><\/span>VNC Connect<\/a>. <\/span>The first<\/span> repeatedly<\/span> terminat<\/span>ed<\/span> sessions after <\/span>a few<\/span> minut<\/span>es, <\/span>and was<\/span> completely impractical.<\/span><\/p>

The second solution allowed longer sessions, but a few weeks after installing it James noticed the cursor on <\/span>a <\/span>computer <\/span>screen<\/span> moving independently<\/span>. He<\/span> realized <\/span>a hacker<\/span> was<\/span> in the process of<\/span> removing<\/span> his antivirus software<\/span>, and<\/span> immediately <\/span>killed <\/span>the<\/span> internet connection<\/span> to stop the attack<\/span>.<\/span> After running a diagnostic,<\/span> he<\/span> discovered <\/span>the system had been compomised via the<\/span> remote access software<\/span> he was using for over<\/span> two days!<\/span><\/p>

After this scare, James <\/span>resolved <\/span>to find a remote access solution with a great security track record, and acquired RealVNC Connect<\/a> licenses for all of his devices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Using Real<\/span><\/span>VNC Connect,<\/a> James <\/span>can operate<\/span> O<\/span>a<\/span>maru FM <\/span>as a virtual station from his broadcast studio in <\/span>Tim<\/span>ar<\/span>u.<\/span><\/p>

O<\/span>a<\/span>maru FM\u2019s systems consist of two computers (a main computer and a backup) located next to the radio transmitter in O<\/span>a<\/span>maru. <\/span>Because <\/span>James is able to upload music and other content to <\/span>these devices from Timaru, <\/span>he can operate both stations from a single location<\/span> \u2013 saving substantial time and money.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
