NAME

vncpasswd - VNC® Server password utility

SYNOPSIS

vncpasswd [-p TYPE] [FILE]

DESCRIPTION

vncpasswd manages password(s) when the VNC authentication scheme is chosen for VNC Server (in any mode). It is an alternative to specifying a new, or changing an existing, password via the VNC Server user interface. Note vncpasswd is not relevant when VNC Server is set to use the system authentication or single sign-on (SSO) schemes.

Run vncpasswd to specify a password (of at least six case-sensitive alphanumeric characters) for VNC Server in User Mode. The password chosen is DES-encoded and stored as the value of the Password VNC parameter in the $HOME/.vnc/config.d/vncserver-x11 VNC configuration file. This means that:

o
The password applies just to VNC Server in User Mode started by the current user.
o
Connected VNC Viewers can change the password via the user interface for VNC Server in User Mode.

Run vncpasswd FILE to nominate a different VNC configuration file. Depending on the file chosen, this may:

o
Apply the password system-wide (that is, to all users of the computer) or set policy (meaning the password cannot be changed by connected VNC Viewers; note an Enterprise license is required).
o
Apply the password to VNC Server in other modes. For example, specify:
o
/root/.vnc/config.d/vncserver-x11 to apply the password to VNC Server in Service Mode. Note vncpasswd must be run with elevated privileges.
o
$HOME/.vnc/config.d/Xvnc to apply the password to VNC Server in Virtual Mode.
o
/etc/vnc/config.d/common.custom to apply the password to VNC Server in all modes for all users. Note vncpasswd must be run with elevated privileges.

If you have an Enterprise or a Personal license, run vncpasswd -p TYPE to specify additional passwords for basic and power users, where TYPE is either:

o
AdminPassword to specify a password for an administrative user able to bypass accept/reject prompts.
o
ViewOnlyPassword to specify a password for a basic user able to observe but not interact.
o
GuestPassword to specify a password for a guest user able to interact once approval to connect has been acquired from an already-connected user.
