Windows Installation and Removal Instructions

The instructions and screenshots on this page refer to Windows Vista; other versions of Windows may differ slightly. Please refer to your system documentation for details of how to install and remove software.

Installing VNC Personal Edition

Double-click on the downloaded installer. You will receive a User Account Control Prompt; click Continue to proceed.

On the Welcome to the VNC Setup Wizard page, click Next. You may see a warning that your license key is invalid. If you see this message, it means that you already have a license key installed on the computer, but that it will not work with VNC Personal Edition version 4.4. If you already have a replacement key, check the I have a replacement license key option and click Next. If you want to update your existing license key, click Renew your license key by email to send an email to RealVNC Ltd.

On the next two pages of the installer, you will need to read and agree to the End-User License Agreement, select an install location. The default location will be appropriate for most users. The next page allows you to select which components to install:

  • VNC Server—Allows this computer to be accessed remotely.
    • VNC Mirror Driver—Greatly improves the performance of VNC Server.
  • VNC Viewer—Allows you to connect to computer running VNC Server. Also installs the VNC Address Book application.

The next few pages allow you to choose a Start Menu group for the installation and whether or not to create desktop and quick-launch icons for VNC Viewer. Most users can simply accept the defaults. An progress dialog will be displayed while the software is being installed. Once this has completed, click Finish to complete installation.

Removing VNC Personal Edition

To remove VNC Personal Edition, run the Programs and Features applet from Control Panel, select VNC Personal Edition P4.4.1 and click Uninstall.

You will receive a User Account Control Prompt; click Continue to proceed. You will then receive a confirmation prompt; click OK and the software will be removed from your system.

Note that this will also uninstall the VNC Mirror Driver, although you may have to refresh the list of installed programs by pressing F5 in order to reflect this.

Using the Stand-Alone VNC Viewer

The installer package contains both the VNC Viewer and the VNC Server and can be used to install just the viewer component. This is the recommended way of installing VNC Viewer if you don't also want to install VNC Server. In particular, it is the only way to install the VNC Address Book.

However, VNC Viewer is also available for download as a stand-alone executable. In this form, it does not need to be installed and can be run directly. This can be useful if your are accessing your VNC Server from an unfamiliar computer, or if you want to carry VNC Viewer with you on a USB memory stick or similar removable storage device.
