Yes, you can, provided you use the correct settings. Both the vnc-server 
and the vnc-viewer have options to control this. At the server, see the 
'sharing' tab. Also have a look at the destkop tab, if the local desktop 
is in use too. For the viewer, see Options -> misc for the shared option.
