automatic hibernate does not work

Just think what you want to do... The remote machine must hibernate. 
That is, dump all memory in some storage and go to sleep. Then you start 
vnc to peek at the machine. If the machine stays asleep, you donnot see 
anything . If you happen to wake the machine, it is not hibernated 
anymore...

If you use vncviewer to see the remote machine fall asleep, then the 
remote machine has the vncserver active, hence there is some activity 
and the machine might not go to sleep. Only if you start the vncviewer 
session in a view-only mode (options-> imputs: deselect all) you might 
not wake the remote machine. You might also need some options-misc 
settings to obscure your view. 'Offer ot automatically reconnect' can 
ruin your day as well...
