can't ping but Remote Desktop works and I can FTP download
as well

Hi there,
Ping isn't a reliable test these days, because many firewalls violate the IP
protocol specification and ignore pings. You're probably able to use Remote
Desktop & FTP because you have exceptions or port forwarding rules for them
in your firewall. You can find hints & tips on configuring firewalls &
routers at http://www.realvnc.com/faq.html - see the NAT router & firewall
sections.
