Viewer disconnection

This morning I needed to perform some remote administration on a Windows 2000 machine running VNC server 4.2.6 across our internal LAN. As things did not seem to be behaving properly, I initiated a reboot of the machine using the start menu: Hit the Start button, select Shut Down, and then Restart in the dialog which pops up. At that point the VNC session immediately closed (or I guess was forced to close, given what I did)
The machine appears have rebooted normally, but when I try to connect to it again I get asked for the password and then a dialog appears titled "VNC Viewer: <server IP>: Question" The message is "The connection closed unexpectedly. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to <server IP>?"
I can connect to another machine at the site concerned, and access the event log remotely. This shows a normal authentication, and then another event with the message "Connections:disconnected: <server IP>:1135 (unable to open input desktop)". The event ID is 1 (although this appears to be true for all RealVNC events...) and just appears with a blue "Information" icon rather than a warning or error icon. I am attempting to connect as a default user using the 128 bit AES encryption option.
Nothing at either end (viewer or server) or on the network has changed. I have searched the list archive for any clues as to what might be causing this without success - is anyone able to help?
I apologise if this comes through as HTML formatted text but as the server concerned hosts our company email systems I have had to use a webmail system to post to the list....
