John,
What do you mean by "the shell screen"? If you mean a standard VNC X
desktop, which by default contains an xterm and vncconfig and uses the Twm
window manager, then the problem may be that there's already a window
manager running when you try to start KDE. The best thing to do would be to
check the VNC X desktop & KDE log files for error messages.
