cannot view from beyond wlan

i have installed vnc4server and xvnc4viewer on two separate machines on a wlan. 

with the command 'xvnc4viewer hostname:display#', after password input, i can view the window of the machine which was running vnc4server.  
when i try viewing it fr another machine not within the wlan, but connected to the Internet, with command 'xvnc4viewer <vnc4server's router ip addr>:hostname:display#', after password input, i get:
 main:        No password configured for VNC Auth


I have used the same password as before.
In the router, i have set port forwarding for application 'vnc' for port # fr 5900-5999.


What could be wrong? the destination host addr?
