black non-repsonsive screens on windows 3 & 4

I have the RH VNC 4.0 server release up and running on my RH AS 4.0 box.  
I'm using VNCviewer 4.1.2 for XP to connect.  I have set up 4 ports or 
windows to connect to, 5901-5904.

I can connect to windows 1 & 2(5901,5902)  just fine but windows 3 and 4 
give me only the dreaded black screen with the X cross hairs.

I have unremarked  these two lines for a normal desktop
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

However, remarking these lines only changes the background from black to 
grey.

on the grey desktop, I can see vncconfig running up in  a corner on both, 
but neither screen 3 or 4 is responsive to the mouse.

The log for 4 (below) looks normal (to me). Any Suggestions or clues so I 
can get these windows functioning properly??
