screen slowww

I have two machines on the same home network, connected thru a router.

VNC free seems to work, but each screen redraw takes about 10 seconds, so 
kinda unusable.
I tried various settings for color and bit depth, but not much difference.

Do i have any other settings I can check?
Would firewall or ports be any issue?

Kinda stuck.
