My big test - 11 people seeing my desktop at the same time

It worked with everyone using a Java browser but a few questions arise

One participant could not get connected, error message:
rdl.IOExeception:java.net.socketexception: socket read failed
Is there a cure?

In a second test I asked viewers to enter a user name.  They failed to
connect.
How is the user name used?

Some users were down to 256 colours.  How is that controlled?

I have:
BT 2gb broadband
ADSL Modem
Smoothwall firewall feeding a small network
Win XP on a HP TC1100 GHz CPU 1gb RAM
