What does the VNC server logs show on the home machine?  Do your
attempts to access it show in there?

Can you ping the machines?

Telnet?  (Although your sysadmins would have locked down port 23 if
they are worth their salt).  Also, just in case of your work's
firewall is blocking default ports, have you tried a different port to
the default 5900 series?
