Problems connecting

Hi,

I am new to VNC and am having problems configuring the system.
If I am on site I can connect, but only if the client computer is  
listening for a connection.
and this only works on the wireless LAN.

When offsite I can't do either reliably.

The config:

Verizon DSL
Linksys Router
