VNC through a router

I am trying to use VNC through my wireless router to
connect from a laptop to a computer in my office
elsewhere.  I am able to connect to the server
computer via an SSH client, but I cannot ping the
server computer and VNC doesn't connect either.  Do I
need to configure the router to allow VNC to connect,
and if so, could someone explain how please?  I'd
really appreciate it, as it would allow me to work
much more efficiently from home.
