How does a client connect to a server through a router

But it won't work unless the router is set up to port forward the VNC
port to the "server" computer.
You should probably try connecting "to" the "client" by running the
"listening" VNC viewer and selecting "Add Client" from the "server" tray
icon, and specifying the "client" IP address.
