Most of the time we're working with Office type applications on 1280x1024 
remote desktops.

For exatablishing connections we're mostly using:

  vncviewer -bgr233 foo:0

But, maybe you're right and there's a little room for improvement.  
Nevertheless, when one considers technology (instead of streaming raw bitmap 
data, NX streams X11 protocol data) I'm would be surprised if VNC's speed can 
approach that of NX under the given circumstances.
