RealVNC disconnecting every 20 seconds

I'm fairly new to VNC. I've got a strange problem. I live in Northern
California and my friend Shawn lives in Southern CA. I was able to connect
to her with Real VNC just fine, and then after a few minutes I kept getting
"connection reset by peer" over and over every 20 seconds or so. I can't
stay connected long enough to work on her computer.
She has no router, and I've opened ports 5800 and 5900 in her firewall. In
fact I tried to run VNC with her XP firewall completely shut off and it does
the same thing. She has high speed internet. Does bandwidth affect the
quality of the connection? Does distance between the two PC's? I tried it
again a different day, and ran into the same problem. Is there something
else I'm missing here?
I'm set up with several other friends with RealVNC and all of those
connections work perfectly.
