Please don't take it personally, since my request wasn't directed
specifically to you, but to all who use this style of quoting. Myself I also
voluntarily help in many mailing lists and newsgroups, and that's the reason
why easy following the discussion is so important to me. Since the number of
poorly formatted replies on this list grew in last days to an amount that
made impossible (at least for me) to follow the conversations, I mentioned
By the way, I even know a few moderated lists/groups where posts formatted
with "top-quoting" are unconditionally rejected by the moderators,
regardless of their content. This is usually the number 1 reason of a post
rejection in these groups.
As for Microsoft, I do not know about the "big" Outlook from the Office
package, but Outlook Express surely has the option to mark the quoted text
with ">". I used it for a few years, as I already wrote. You need to disable
HTML mail for this and switch to plain text, but who in the world sends HTML
mail to mailing lists anyway? (Mailing list server serving this list strips
out HTML part, even if you send it to list). I agree that preceding each
quoted line with ">" manually would be unfeasible. Happily, Outlook does
this by itself - the only things that must be done manually are deleting
unwanted lines and moving the cursor from the top to the bottom...
