DSL with VNC

I apologize for this if it's been discussd already.
I've searched a bit and didn't find anything.
How do you connect to a server (as client) running VNC
if that server's ISP is DSL? I've researched it based
on simply DSL+VNC and I haven't seen anything other
than the fact that DSL is similar to a router, i.e.
192.168.x.xx. I assumed that all you needed to do was
port-forward the server in DSL. The problem is that
there ISN'T a router. I believe it's called a
"bridge". I have no idea how to port-forward the
"bridge" in the same manner as a router.. Does this
whole process require additional setup software? Am I
even on the right track?
Thank you all for any help in advance..
