Ronald,

Are you sure that you don't have both VNC 3 and VNC 4 installed on the
computer in question?  If you are running VNC Viewer 4 manually, saving a
.vnc file, but VNC Viewer 3 is registered to open .vnc files then you'll see
errors of this sort.
