Version 4.1 of the viewer will build on Irix 6.5.22 with gcc 3.3.
Assuming you use the n32 ABI, You have to regenerate configure with
autoconf 2.5x or fix its treatment of paths for X in the generated
files; otherwise it will fail to link, trying to use o32 libraries.
