VNC on irix

Hi ive download these files from here

http://www.uk.research.att.com/archive/vnc/platforms.html#sgi

i copied across the files to my indy

set chmod +x for all the files and ran vncserver

its set up a vncserver which i can acess on scsgindm:1 from my PC

when i do this i get up an X desktop with command  window

i can run programs with in the window ie more etc

but if i try to open jot (irix equilavlent of notepad) i get a 
segmentation error,
i can get it to display some other loading graphics but no program out 
side the window will load with out producing a segmentation error

is this meant to be how it operates ?

if so what is the difference between connecting to an indy through vnc 
and telnet ?

should i be able to get programs to run ?

do i need to

setenv DISPLAY scsgindm:1 or something like that ?

any help would be appreciated.
