Mac and OSXVNC connection issues

The OS X Firewall controls can be found at System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall. The main control is Start/Stop; to allow VNC with the firewall on, you have to create a New checkbox item. VNC is among the list; its ports are 5900-5902 unless you edit them.
Even if the firewall is off, the Tip that appears on mouseover for the text beside a checkbox states the situation that would be in force if the firewall were on. Shame on Apple for not making it clear; a consistent inteface is one of their first rules.
So, Ernie, you may want to make sure by both adding the VNC item and checking it so it will be allowed by the firewall, and also making sure the firewall is off.

Try connecting from the Mac to itself, using the 192.168.x.x (LAN) address,
and see whether that works. Try something like:
Telnet 192.168.x.x 5900 "Connect to port 5900 on machine
You should see "RFB 003.008" printed, or similar.
If this works then your VNC server is working. If not then either the
server isn't working, or your Mac has some sort of firewall in effect.
