red screen

I'm taking a stab here, but I've had my RedHat machine screen completely blank except for a terminal window upon installation of 
VNC. I found out that you will need to edit ~/.vnc/xstartup  and uncomment the line "exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc".
