Remote Viewer Open Multiple Times in Nested Windows

Im new at this posting thing.  I read an August 2004 thread describing
the exact same problem that Im experiencing that was never resolved.
When I connect to the server, the viewer opens on the desktop, but
within that VNC viewer a new instance is opened and within that a new
instance, etc.  There seems to be no way to halt this spiral without
simply clicking the X in the upper right corner of the first window
which closes the VNC viewer.  Does anybody have any idea how to resolve
this problem?
