connecting from one local network to a different local network

Assuming you are both firewalled,  which is probably the case, you
have three options.

1.  Forward a port on your companies firewall - you need access to the
router/firewall
2.  Forward a port on their firewall - They need access to the router/firewall
3.  VPN/Tunneling - One of you needs a vpn server, the other a client
4.  Third party proxy, e.g. go to my vnc - traffic flows through
another site, usually costs $
