Assigning client to a free vncserver

We use multiple VNC servers on a network. We would
like to use one of these servers from a Linux Desktop.
So we use script that check the usage of VNC server
and assign to a free Server as follows.

  It Connects to (VNCVIEWER) to each server on the
network.
  And checks the returncode
  If the returncode is 1(Connection is OK) It connects
to that server otherwise connect to next server

This worked. But the problem is that If one of the VNC
Server(Windows) hangs, the return code would not tell
it's status. 

Is this a right way to allow users to connect
different servers? Please advice. thanks.
