only ping one way from xp home to xp but unable to ping back from xp to xp home

Do you have the Windows firewall turned on?  If so, it may very well be
blocking both ICMP (ping) and VNC.  This could also be any other software
firewall you may have installed.

Check that and let us know,

I am new here and should be very grateful if you could

I used DSL modern to network two home pc. One used xp
home edision, and the other used normal xp.

After installed VNC, I was only able to ping and view
by VNC from xp home edision pc to xp normal pc but
unable to ping and view by VNC from xp normal edison
pc to xp home edison pc.
