problem with keyboard (and mouse?) focus in a vmware workstation running through vnc

Further to this, I'm seeing the following warning :

[root "at" aqua root]# xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
[root "at" aqua root]# su vmanager
[vmanager "at" aqua root]$ vmware
Xlib:  extension "XFree86-VidModeExtension" missing on display ":1.0".


Which I suspect is part of the problem.  The server doesn't have a lot
of X11 installed on it.  Would that error be relevant?
