When you say the machine is not on your network, do
you mean you are trying to connect to a different
machine at a different location, perhaps over the
internet?
If so, the remote location needs to be setup to allow
for this connection. There is information in the <a
href="http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html">documentation</a>
that explains things like "Port Forwarding".
I would strongly reccommend you read the<a
href="http://www.realvnc.com/documentation.html">documentation</a>.
Also check out the <a

Setup Documentation.</a>
