I don't think there is a difference between Sun and MS JAVA as far as RealVNC goes. But I have only used it with the Sun Java client downloaded from Sun's website, on Win2k sytems.
As for the "standalone" mode, I'm not sure what you mean. Perhaps you are a referring to "User Mode" as opposed to "Service Mode". In Service mode RealVNC loads as a service and thus is a available even before the machine is logged onto by a user. In User mode, RealVNC does not launch until a user clicks on the RealVNC application or a shortcut is put in the Registry RUN section or Programs \ Start Up section.
