vnc -query failing on solaris 8 with dtlogin

I have setup vnc to query localhost for a XDMCP session and login to CDE, 
and this works fine on Solaris 9, but on Solaris 8 machines, the login 
hangs after providing user and passwd (i am left with a black screen). the 
/var/dt/Xerrors log shows the message:

dtlogin: received signal 11

When I tried running vncserver and -query to a different Solaris machine, 
it works fine. So the problem is only when vnc and the xdm server are 
running on the same machine under Solaris 8.
Any ideas why this happens?  I have tried applying all relevant Solaris 
patches, with no luck.
