eclipse problem

I am nearly insane as I have dealt with VNC crashes when editing java 
classes in eclipse.  At times, (seems to depend on network traffic), it is 
absolutely unusable.  I have tried to abandon VNC and simply use X.  I 
have not been successful.  I am working with VPN and cable modem.  I just 
don't have enough band width.

Several people have presented the problem in the VNC mail archives.  I 
have not found a solution presented.  Is there one?

I do have one bit of information to present.  The problem is/was present 
in 3.3.7 but seems to be worse in 4.0.  The crashes I am seeing are server 
crashes.  I would be happy to be a  "guinea pig" for a fix.  I really 
depend on this tool and need a fix badly.

In the interim, if anyone can give me tips on optimizing X for use via 
vpn, I would appreciate it.
