The user in question stated (and I quote) "I just installed the latest VNC
server on my Windows XP machine." - my reply therefore related purely to VNC
Server and not to other software based on it. 

Since ZlibHex is neither a standard part of the RFB protocol, nor a
registered extension to it, the most likely cause of the reported error is
that it clashes with a standard encoding type, and that CotVNC is then
interpreting the encoded data incorrectly.
