~/.vnc: No such file or directory when starting vncserver

I saw this same problem posted earlier this month, but saw no response yet
with a resolution.
I installed the vncserver package on a stable release of Debian woody
(3.0.2). The version showing for the package is 3.3.3r2-20.
After the install as root, I tried running vncserver from my own account,
which doesn't have root privileges. It asks me for a password and then gives
me "~/.vnc: No such file or directory". An ls -la on my home directory shows
that the .vnc directory exists and has these permissions: "drwxr-xr-x 2 "
with me as the owner and group. There's nothing in the directory. I tried
changing the permissions to 775 and still get the same error. vncpasswd also
gives me "~/.vnc: No such file or directory".
Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Tim
