I would highly recommend using filters.  Depending on how you get your mail another option would be to use a pre-processor to add things to the subject.

Much like the reply-to debate, it is up to the list owner to make the choice.  This list has never had any subject line changes.

IMHO adding noise to the subject line is the wrong answer for what is basically a filtering problem.
