If it's any comfort, speaking from occasional embarrassing experiences, VNC
eats resources more slowly than pcAnywhere in this situation... :)

Subject: How to use German keyboard...

This might be a silly question but I could not find the answer on the
website or in the archive:
How can I setup realvnc to be used with a German keyboard - I run
OSXync on a Mac which I access using realvnc 4.0 from a Windows 2000 PC
whith a German keyboard. The keyboard setup seems to be US-UK right
now.
Thank you for helping out,
Florian Forstmann

Under any NT-based system, viewing the desktop from a VNC Viewer that is on
that desktop shouldn't cause things to grind to a halt, although it will
usually cause pointer-management confusion. In our tests of local-loopback
connections of this type, it's always the case that you can summon the F8
Menu and select Close in order to break out of the loop, and never the case
that resource usage is climbing.
What is the behaviour that you see?

VNC should not be "eating resources" at all. Its CPU usage will rise,
because each update of the viewer contents will cause the server to send a
new update, until the cascade effect stabilises. These updates will be
rate-limited in the normal way, though, so they won't cause an increase in
resource usage over time.
The most probable cause of very high CPU usage in the loopback case is that
you have pressed keys inside the viewer. The key press will then be sent to
the server, which will then reproduce it, sending it back to the viewer, and
so on. You can simply Alt-Tab out of the viewer to stop that, or minimise
it, or perform anyother action that stops the viewer having focus.
