Curious input problem when using VNC 4.0 Viewer

This concerns VNC 4.0 Final, on a Windows 2000 network (client and server):
When I use VNC viewer to connect to a remote user, a problem occurs sporadically.
First, the mouse buttons seem to get mixed up and when I double-click something (like, say, My Computer) it acts as if I right-clicked on it and chose Properties. The Ctrl key on the keyboard is also seemingly pressed down in the computer's mind because if I left-click on something and then another, they both get highlighted, and so on. Right-clicking on things seems to work, and that is how I have to open things. This only seems to happen on icons, as left-clicking on the Start Menu works as intended.
Second, the keyboard stops functioning. And this continues even if I stop viewing the remote user. Also, the user at the local computer loses keyboard functioning, as well.
One time this happened on a server and I just kept trying to type and the problem went away after about 15-20 minutes of frustrating experimentation. With all subsequent occurrences on users' workstations I just have them reboot and it fixes it.
Anyone else have this problem or (better yet) know of a fix?
