Son Headed Off To College

My son is headed off to college in a few days and I may need to remotely help
him with the computer he is taking to his apartment room.  The pc is a Windows
XP Pro system with more than adequate memory, disk space, etc.

I've been testing VNC within our own network and think its great.  But my
question is... how am I going to connect to his room computer when it'll be
hooked up to a hi-speed cable connection?  I think I'd need to know his
outside IP address, correct?

Any help on this matter will sure be appreciated.
