The VNC protocol adapts to the available bandwidth, so VNC cannot be said to "take up" bandwidth. If there is little bandwidth available then VNC will simply send updates less frequently. The Auto Select functionality in the viewers allows them to pick the most suitable colour and encoding settings for the available bandwidth, too. Cheers, Wez @ RealVNC Ltd.
