Thanks for the advice.  I had already forwarded those ports as you described
  The answer turned out to be the format used within the browser to access
my system from the browser.

ie:  http://<ip address>:5801 (for display 1)

  To initiate a web session, you need to forward port 5800 (display 0) as
well. In your browser, you have to put
http://your_vnc_server:5800
