Can v4.0b3 run as windows 98 service?

Start -> Programs -> VNC Server 4 (Service mode) -> Register VNC Service

works okay, but

Start -> Programs -> VNC Server 4 (Service mode) -> Start VNC Service

gives a repeating cascade of 3 or 4 DOS boxes, each saying:

VNC Server 4.0 - VNC server for Win32, Version 4.0b3
Built on Jul 28 2003 at 16:05:36
Copyright (R) RealVNC 2002-2003

Log setting:*:file:0
Log setting:Connections:file:100
Run in sevice mode
Attempting to stop service...
Attempting to start service...

Am I attempting the impossible on my win98se box?
Has anyone had the same experience?
Is there a workaround?
