No Hub LAN 127.0.0.1

Hello all,
Set up and used Real VNC with two Win XP PCs on LAN with router and cable 
Internet service.
Set up and used Real VNC with two Win 98 PCs on LAN with router and 
wireless Internet service.
No problem.  Got IP addresses with mouse hover in sys tray.

Tried to set up WinXP & Win98 PC on LAN WITHOUT router.  Used 
peer-to-peer(?) connection with crossover Enet cable.  (Note: this is an 
Ethernet LAN, not Direct Cable Connection).  Couldn't find the IP address 
to use.
Hover gives 127.0.0.1 on both machines.  Can't find IP address info in 
WinXP or Win98 Control Panel / Network setup or My Computer / Properties.

Any Ideas?
