What is the ideal development area to complie WinVNC Source code?

Dear all,

I would like to be able to go to the WINVNCs source
code and be able to change/modify some of the
functionalities there. 

Could you kindly provide me with information regarding
the development area?  I.e. what type of program can I
compile VNC source code on! E.g. would either
Microsoft Visual C++ or gcc work!
